Tutorial important note
You can also upload attachments directly to our forum, without following the operations described in this tutorial, our forum will automatically resize and compress them, according to our settings, which for images are:
Size:800x768 pixels
Weight: 100KbAnyhow, if you want to learn how to do it by yourself (to obatin the results you want as far as size and compression), here you go.
Tutorial introduction
In these forums, you are allowed to upload images as attachments. In order for them to be successfully uploaded on our server, they have to respect a certain size, depending on the format in which is stored the image.
Images have two characteristics we pay attention to:
dimensions on our screen: measured in pixels
size on our hard disk: measure in KbytesIn geneal, an image with bigger dimensions will have also a big size in term of Kbytes, but there is not always a linear relation between the two factors.
The factor which is most important for us is the the weight in Kbytes, as we pay a hosting fee for the webspace provided on our server and we receive a predetermined amount of space., which is not unlimited.
So images need to be optimized: it means to optimize the relation between size in pixels and weight in Kbytes.
Our Forums software automatically optimize images which exceed our parameters, but it is always good to know how to do it by yourself.
Let's consider an example. You have on your PC an image in JPG format, size 1200x400, which occupies 1.250Kb. A big and heavy image, but you would like to upload it on the forums for all to see.
In our Forums we let people upload JPG images till the format 800x768 and a maximum weight of 100Kb.
If your image is too heavy you can resize it and optimize it for the forum in some very easy steps with a graphic editing software which you will have to download and install on your computer.
In this Tutorial we will use a freeware software. It means you do not have to pay nothing to download and use it, it is absolutely free.
This software is called FAST STONE IMAGE VIEWER (http://www.faststone.org/FSViewerDetail.htm).
Resizing and optimizing images using Fast Stone Image Viewer.
Through this tutorial we will see how to resize and optimize an image using Fast Stone Image Viewer.
We will use a 1920x1200 image, a pretty big one, which can be seen here (http://utenti.lycos.it/elpresa/images/reflection.jpg).
This image weights 737Kb, so it is very big and very heavy.
http://www.elpresa.com/forums/images/tutorials/fast_st_2b.jpg
We will see in some simple and guided steps how to obtain an image of 800x500 pixels which weight 65Kb.
1. Download the software here (http://www.download.com/FastStone-Image-Viewer/3000-2192-10324485.html?part=dl-FastStone&subj=dl&tag=button)
2. Install it on your PC. It is a pretty light software which won't harm your PC performance.
3. Open the software by clicking this icon which should be placed on your desktop

4. Once opened, the software will show you on the left the directories of your PC where you have stored the images, and on the right a preview of the files and of the folders.

5. Select the image you want to resize (reduce pixels) and/or optimize (reduce weight in kbs by the aid of software compression).
http://www.elpresa.com/forums/images/tutorials/fast_st_3.jpg
6. Go with your mouse over the button "Resize/Resample" and click it
http://www.elpresa.com/forums/images/tutorials/fast_st_4.gif
7. You will see this windows, which contains the information about your original file
http://www.elpresa.com/forums/images/tutorials/fast_st_5.gif
8. Now edit the "Pixel width" field to your desired value, in this case 800. The other "Pixel height" field will adjust automatically to keep proportions of the image. Then click "Ok".
http://www.elpresa.com/forums/images/tutorials/fast_st_6.gif
9. Now the software has registered your request, and the window of Resize/Resample has disappeared. It is ok, just click on any other points of the screen, like another image, or a folder. A popup window will appear.
http://www.elpresa.com/forums/images/tutorials/fast_st_7.gif
10. Click ok and you will see this other window
http://www.elpresa.com/forums/images/tutorials/fast_st_8.gif
11. Before saving the cropped image, you can use compression tools to optimize its weight, given the new dimensions you have just chosen.
To do this, in this window, just select "Advanced".
http://www.elpresa.com/forums/images/tutorials/fast_st_9.gif
12. You will enter a new window in which you have to select the option flag "Lock Preview". Then you can choose the desired value of compression to reduce the weight of you image. The more the compression, the lighter will be your image, but at a certain value it will begin to loose details also. A good value you can take as reference is 65. You can also see a preview of how your image looked originally and how will look like after the resample process. When you are done with this, click Ok.
http://www.elpresa.com/forums/images/tutorials/fast_st_10.jpg
13. Now you are back to the window where you can choose where to save your file. Notice the value of compression is specified in the lower part of the window. When you have found where to store your resized and resample image, just click "Save".
http://www.elpresa.com/forums/images/tutorials/fast_st_11.gif
14. You have just resized and resampled an image which was 241kb and 1920x1200 pixels to an optimized image of 800x500 which weights just 65kb (9% of the original wieght).
You can also upload attachments directly to our forum, without following the operations described in this tutorial, our forum will automatically resize and compress them, according to our settings, which for images are:
