Guppy is about 2 or 3 years old, and was found abandoned in the parking lot of a Target shopping center. He was taken to Prince George's County Animal Management Division (a high kill shelter in MD) where he was then pulled when his time was up. Guppy is not yet neutered because he is currently undergoing heartworm treatment, but he will be neutered as soon as that's complete. He's a shy boy, and does not have the nerve a Presa should. Somebody nearby the rescue does target practice, and he was very spooked by the gunshots (tail tucked, trying to pull me back to the kennels). He has never shown any aggression to people, and has been around adults and kids (the kids were about 7 I think). He likes laps and pets and cuddles. Guppy did go after a 30lb male dog last Saturday, sending that dog to the vet, but he got along well with a female mastiff he was introduced to, so he may not like male dogs (but I wasn't there, I didn't see what may have caused it). It would be great of Guppy could get a home that knows Presas that could work on building his confidence. He can be cat tested if necessary.

Interested parties should go to www.foha.org for more information. This rescues does not adopt out of the Northern VA/MD/DC area.

Presa Canario are becoming more common here, being bred by unscrupulous breeders for money, and Guppy is what they are typically churning out.

Enjoying my lap. And giving the camera an evil death stare.

He's very cute!

It's too bad more rescues don't adopt out of their area. It'd be a great thing if they networked with other rescues to do home visits if needed. I have contacted three rescues regarding Presas lately, wanting to adopt, and none of them adopt out of state or the immediate area. Too bad, I have a loving and experienced home available on a farm with another Presa, and references out the wazzou. Anyway, good luck with this guy and I hope socialization brings him out of his shell.

I would love to adopt him, but I live in Michigan and they don't allow out of state adoptions

Are they sure on 2-3 yrs? He looks very immature to me..

Maryland has been lousy with unscrupulous breeders (who don't test for anything, and throw any two dogs together) for years...I think the economy is just bringing their "product" to light more. We have a few in Va too, but still on the minority, but it does seem that every time I googlesearch the breed, there's more "breeders" popping up that don't even seem to know their own dog's lines.

I have a prospective home in DC that has already been approved, and has just been waiting for the right dog. I will forward him this post, and see if he's interested.

Thank you. :)

The age is what the shelter guessed. He's likely not older than 2, but I don't think he's any younger than 1 1/2.

Oh I learned more about his story. It turns out that the shelter FOHA pulled the dog from actually tracked down his owner AND the guy who sold Guppy to his owner and NEITHER wanted to pay the shelter's fee to get him back! They just left him to an uncertain fate in a very high kill shelter. Its a good thing that shelter liked him so much and contacted rescue. Crappy people.
