i have 3 dogs houses, and one real big one i made, all 3 of the dogs like to sleep together in that one. anyways i used a bunch of cedar bedding stuff from walmart for the floor of it to keep them warm in there. I heard cedar repels ticks and fleas? I was reading online and someone said not to use cedar because its bad for the dogs lungs or something like that? whats your guys take on it?

Cedar shavings contain phenols which can give respitory problems to animals that live in it.
In most cases you talk about mice, pet rats, guiny pigs etc, but I'm sure it wont be very good for dogs either.

I have found some more info for you to read:

presapaisbajos is right.

i have 3 chinchillas, and I avoid cedar bedding for that exact reason. I'm pretty sure that all animals would be affected in a similar way on cedar bedding...

An alternative you can look into is aspen bedding. There are places that sell huge bags of it. I buy a 9 cubic feet bag for like 15 bucks. Aspen is considered one of the safest bedding choices.

I agree, in the rankings for aromatic hydrocarbon release pine is the worst, followed by cedar. Aspen is much better (safer). I know a lot of people use straw as well and seem to have good results (my dogs are house dogs, so not speaking from personal experience).

do you guys think i should just get rid of all the cedar in their dog house? or do you think it would be ok to mix it with the aspen bedding?
