Hi guys/gals. Just wanted to introduce myself, my name is Jay and im from central california. Untill yesterday i had the pleasure of sharing my life with a female presa for the last 6 years, we had to have her euthanized as a result of failed kidneys. the results of the necropsy wont be back for some time were looking for poisening as a possability, 2 weeks ago a neighbors pig rooted under the fence and princess did her job with it. no real damage to the hog or princess ( shes was a pro on hogs) but the neighbors are #$%$##& wackos and dont seem to understand that the piece of crap pig isnt going to die from a torn up ear and bruised nose. ( his hind legs were cut up a bit from my other dog, an APBT who had yet to be entered on hogs). After her loss i felt the need to try and connect with the presa community as im sure you all will understand what part of me is missing now with her gone, she wasnt just my dog,my wife and 2 children, ages 3 and 7, are missing that same piece of themselves.

To kind of help me celebrate her life instead of sitting here missing her ( i know ill be preaching to the choire) soon i will put together a few short recounts of some of our encounters that highlight what makes a presa a presa and in turn, the ultimate all around canine. take care everyone, hug your presas for me :)

Jay

here is princess on the left and an APBT named pun that was killed by a black bear shortly after this pic was taken.excuse the mess behind them, that day we were moving into a house we bought that had been vacant for some time and had to put the dogs in the fenced area as they didnt know the area yet and i didnt have the radio fence installed.they were none to happy that they couldnt help.

I'm really sorry to hear about your dogs as well. Sounds like you had some good dogs that get some miles on them. Do you go hog hunting?

Thanks you guys! happily i have a TON of memories from the day she was 8 weeks old untill the last day of her life. it was a pure pleasure having her be part of the family. the unrelenting loayalty, drive and ability she posessed was enough to endear her to us forever.

I have been hog hunting 4 times, 3 of them were with princess and her breeder ( and a few other bully and hound guys) the last time i went is when i Lost Pun. we sent him in on a big boar when my buddys apbt was having trouble holding him, the pit lost his grip on the ear before pun got to him and the boar split with pun and the others on his tail, it took 2 hours to catch up to them and pun wasnt with them. we used telemetry to find him about a 1/2 mile away torn up and just about dead, he didnt make it back to the truck. that was the last time, not because i lost pun.. that stuff happens when you work game with dogs ( not that it didnt hurt like hell to lose a damn good dog), but because i hadnt had the time or the dogs to go, princess got torn up good and i decided not to take her out again.

When the right presa litter comes along i will undoubtedly get another pup, once youve had a presa it seems that most other dogs wont do.. the occasional exceptional APBT, AB or Bandogge bieng the only thing close. I have had such a great experience with presas though that the old saying comes into play "if it aint broke, dont fix it" so i see no need to get anything other than a presa. My APBT is a good dog but he doesent have the drives i would require from a working dog as he is from show dog lineage ( Gaff on the sires side and big razors edge dogs on the dam's.. not exactly working dogs).

Paul, were not too far from each other, im in the modesto area. do you work with presas?

take care!

Jay

Hi Jay,

Sorry about your loss as Princess sounded like a great girl.

I actually used to train in Modesto, Manteca, and various other places throughout the valley. I live close to Fresno and used to live in Stockton. It's good to know that there is a Presa fan in the valley like yourself.

Regards,
Juan

Juan, yes sir, there are not many of us presa fans in the valley it seems, at least no others ive ran into who even know what a presa is. when i would take princess out to the chain pet stores to pick toys or treats etc, i would get alot of things like "nice bullmastiff" or " thats a big pit"..lol.

I never found a place to train here, i just did alot of reading online and learned to encourage her natural ability, more of guiding and focusing her flow rather than "training" her to do anything ( aside from obediance), i knew what she was good at and what she wasnt so we just went that route. do you know of anyone working presas in the valley? i would love to watch some dogs work some time. take care!

Jay,

In the greater valley area, if you're willing to drive a bit north of you (a bit past Sacramento) you can see a few Presas train. I'm going to make it to that training group on on one of these days. Myself, I make the drive up to Sonora for the closest training with my Presa. Other than that, there isn't anyone else training Presas that I'm aware of around here. I'll send you a private message to fill you in on the details.

Best Regards,
Juan
