Are you planning to purchase a puppy directly from Spain? Well …….there is a risk. Many breeders in Spain started because of the raising popularity of Presa, not because of love for the breed. Good example is a money hungry Eterna Primavera Kennel from Northern Spain. They started some 10 years ago smelling the profit. They breed Yorkshire Terriers and Dogo Canario. Most of their Dogo Canario dogs are mutts, smaller size then standard with hipdysplasia and other serious health problems. Unfortunately we found these facts after we purchased a puppy from them. Big mistake.
Because of the bad breeding of E.P. Kennel this puppy has serious genetic health defect. Even when we have a written agreement from Jenny, (daughter of the owner Margarita Lopez Brito), that in case the puppy will suffers from any genetic health defects, (such as Hipdysplasia) it will be replaced for the healthy one. However, Jenny and Margarita from E.P. Kennel refused any replacement or money refund.

There are more puppies from Eterna Primavera Kennel who will also have serious health defects.
If you purchased a puppy from Eterna Primavera Kennel and found that your puppy has any genetic health problems please contact us as soon as possible at: Janedgocnrio@yahoo.com You might be qualified to participate on a large lawsuit what we are preparing against this breeder.

Later on we acknowledged that E.P. Kennel in Girona Spain is running something like puppy mill breeding. To find out how puppy mill looks like see this sample video from U.S.: http://video.hsus.org/index.jsp?auto_band=x&rf=sv&fr_story=675c6f7ce6cf8a5b1e6cd6b9ee1bd42806c5bfe8

We should improve the breed, not to destroy it with bad breeding and diseases. We should share the information and register all bad breeders and puppy mill breeders. (something like the Internet sex offenders registrations)

The conclusion: Check the breeder as much as you can before you purchase a puppy. Ask questions, ask for referrals, guarantees, x-rays, dog food used, vaccinations, everything. Buy Presa from U.S. breeder only, there are already a plenty of good puppies available here in U.S.. We learned our lesson the hard way. You could do better.

Good luck,
Jane

Wow!! Sorry for your Few thousand dollar learning experience, and though I got a few of my dogs here in the united states, some I cant say are the best examples of the breed, just good house pets. Wherever you purchase your dog from, here or abroad, we should do research, and like I'm sure Slamm and SteelFist has said before take an experienced trainer with you to test em and pick if you are able to make the trip. However I'm not to sure if any breeders are to willing to part with the best in their yard unless they know for sure who they are going to(jmho). Sorry to ramble, but hope all gets better with your dog, Greg

True. I was duped and was told the pup was a presa, shown an eleven month old female on the premises supposedly out of the same parents that had to have been a presa, and was given a lot of detail on presas, etc. by this individual. Convincing given the build, brindling, and dark mask, but looking back I was very naive and I guess on some level just wanted to get that pup out of there to a better life. He is probably pit-presa, or presa-boxer, bandogge, who knows, but I really do like him and he is a great dog. I have had people run up to me on the sidewalk and ask me about this "presa pup" but hey, there is presa, and there is presa, didn't a wise one once say? 75lbs at just under 7 months, and gets along great with other dogs, and people - just a bit suspicious of strange men approaching me. Very healthy all around too. I have no regrets because he is great, and is happy now - but I am not okay with having been duped for money like that when he should have been a few hundred bucks. That's actionable fraud, and, that very attitude of money first puts these dogs into the wrong hands, and whether they are presas or not, any negative problems or accidents (or dogfighting) will be against the presa name because that is what these buyers believe they have, tell everyone they have, etc. Not fair to responsible owners at all.

If somebody deicide to purchase a pup from Gran Canaria they should contact the "Club del perro de presa canario de Las Palmas", a non-profit asociation to protect the original presa breed. they can help recomending good and reputable breeders.
