I have officially taken over as head of the Presa Rescue.

I would like to ask all of you what you can offer in terms of help with the rescue effort. As more and more litters are produced and placed in poorly screened homes, the number of calls and requests to pull dogs from shelters or unsuitable homes increases.

It is crucially important that we put aside the Presa/ Dogo debate when it comes to dogs that are in shelters/ in need of placement. To those that do shelter work there is no difference between the Presa Canario and Dogo Canario. Half of the time they can't even tell a Presa, Bullmastiff, Cane Corso and Boerboel apart. What is important is that we are able to provide assistance in helping dogs that are perceived to be Presa/ Dogo or mixes thereof, otherwise it appears that the people involved in the breed do not care about the fate of it's members. Further, the alternative is often allowing shelter workers who, though well meaning, often do not understand the type of home environment the Presa requires, to put dogs in homes that are not well matched to their temperment. In order to prevent placement of these dogs in homes where they may become a liability to the breed as a whole, it is imperative that we as Presa fanciers step up and provide what assistance we can to help the breed as a whole.

There are many ways you can help, including screening applicants, doing home checks, assessing temperment of dogs, providing transport and acting as a foster home. The greatest need right now is for foster homes and regional contacts.

If there is anyone who does web-work, assistance in keeping the Presa Rescue site (currently located at www.presarescue.com (http://www.presarescue.com/)) current would be greatly appreciated.

Please feel free to contact me via PM or email (GML25@cornell.edu) if you can be of assistance. Remember, even helping in small ways will make a difference for our breed as a whole.
