In order to clarify the content on El Presa we will now provide a list of definitions. These are the facts. I just want you to know what we mean here on El Presa when we use these terms. I thought we would let reality dictate the definitions as opposed to definitions trying to dictate reality.

1)" Perro de Presa Canario". A very specific and rare breed of dog. Whenever you see the words "Perro de Presa Canario" it refers to the modern Perro de Presa Canario as a breed of dog that originated in the Canary Islands, mainly near Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. The Perro de Presa Canario must be result of crossings of Majorero Cattle dog, "Presas" from the Islands and various Mastiffs and Bulldogs during the reconstruction period on the Canary Islands. The Perro de Presa Canario was recognized as a breed in 1989 by the RSCE and got its first "official" standard . More recently the Perro de Presa Canario was recognized by the UKC in its traditional name, coat colors and patterns. Perro de Presa Canario literally means "The Canary gripping dog" The Perro de Presa Canario is a working breed and is bred to maintain those characteristics.

2) "Dogo Canario". The Dogo Canario is a breed that may share some of the same roots ( common ancestors) as the Perro de Presa Canario. Here on El Presa a Dogo Canario is an FCI registered dog that is out of the breeding program of the CEDC. The CEDC is a single club (group of breeders) on Tenerife that bred for "type" exclusively while ignoring health and working temperment concerns. It is this selection process for apppearance only that has changed the breed from what it was to what "dog fancy" wants it to be. While the Perro de Presa Canario must have blood of the Majorero in its genes it is not a requirement for the Dogo Canario even though it is a part of the breed description and standard. Many so called Champion Dogo Canario can be proven to have no Majorero blood in their lineage. The Dogo Canario is bred for exhibition and show. The FCI ( European Kennel Club) recognized the Presa Canario as the Dogo Canario in 2001 and changed the name and historic standard. Very few breeders in the Canary Islands ,outside the club( CEDC) have accepted the name change or standard modifications. The El Presa Forum is dedicated to the original Perro de Presa Canario in name and historic coat colors and patterns which were adopted by the RSCE ( Spanish Kennel Club) in 1989. Some Dogo Canario breeders insist the Presa Canario and the Dogo Canario are the same breed. It is to their advantage to claim their dogs have all the working attributes and temperment of the Presa Canario. This is not true.

3) "American Presa" or Pseudo Presa" Dogs called Presas who have any dogs in their pedigree that have no legitimate, provable link to the Canary Islands. People in the U.S often mixed imported Presa Canario with other breeds when they got here. Since they are recent crosses they are not considered Perro de Presa Canario. Names like "Arbaco" , "Bullrog",
"Sherkhan", "Schmidts" and others, are often found in these pedigrees.

4) "Presa" or "Perros de Presa" Long before any official movement to create a breed (a group of dogs that look the same) there were dogs on the Islands that were holding dogs. Kept to do a job (hold cattle, kill wild dogs, fight, protect the goatherds and guard the house). They had various physical and coat color characteristics. They were "Presas". The word "Presa" means to clutch, hold or grip. They were not a breed they were called "Presas" because of what they did, not what they looked like. Men who bred these dogs for the task were referred to as "Preseros" . Some Preseros had been breeding these holding dogs for generations prior to any official recognition. Presas were tall or short, white, black, tan or striped, thin and thick. As long as they worked and earned their way they were "Presas" Excellent examples can be found in our Spanish Forum http://forum.elpresa.com/viewforum.php?f=9 . There are still old "Preseros" breeding their old lines of holding dogs known as "Presas"
