So I am considering adding a Dobe to my life at some point in the next year. I don't think another Presa will be in the cards until I and settled and have some land and a good fence.

Anyone have thoughts on the breed? How do they compare to the Presa (intelligence, trainability, dog aggression, human aggression, energy level, etc).

Thanks,

Genevieve

Gen , if you get a good Dobie it will be very drivey and , very much a hand full, nowhere near as laid back as your Pecha and if you get a bad one, well you get a bad one. You have an exception in Pecha, she, apparently has no dog aggression. I would stick with a Presa and get a neutered male from a good breeder if you are worried about compatibility. Now, if hiking trails and letting dogs run offleash fits your lifestyle better I would really consider a good lab. You might consider a good GSD if you want the best of both worlds, hiking companion with a little intimidation factor just in case.

I love Dobes, but haven't owned one. I worry too much about their health and temperment. I would be really worried about finding a good breeder. A friend of mine has a red male, who squats when he pees  That dog would not be eating at my house...

Anyways, my trainers have a dobe pup with natural ears and tail (so they can compete internationally) and the thing is way too hyper for me. I loved my presa because she was so relaxed unless she needed to be otherwise. I will have to go visit and see how the dog is doing these days :)

I remember a woman who posted on Bandog Banter who had a project going where she bred Dobes with a dog that was as far different genetically as possible, in order to get hybrid vigor, and some of the pups looked exactly like Dobes, wish I could remember who she was.... it was really really neat... I have probably messed that story up completely, maybe someone else knows who / what I'm talking about!

Hey Meredith,

Don't know if your talking about the Canis Panther or not; but I think this breed is all hype. They have some Dobe in them.

There is a HUGE dobe breeder in PA called Kimbertal Kennels - have heard many neg. about them and their Rotties.

I had Dobermans for 17 years before getting into the Presas. Dobermans are high energy, intelligent dogs who like to be number 1 dog with their family and their nick name of velcro dog is well deserved. Dobes normally learn very quickly and get bored twice as quick, lol. When I was competing I never did obedience for more then an hour a week because if I did she was sure to add something interesting to the routine
Dobes HAVE to be excersized daily....if you dont watch out. I never trust a Doberman in the house loose until they are about 2 years old. Over the years I probably had over 40 Dobermans....only 5 of my own, the others rescues. If I wanted something to compete with I would get another Doberman, but it is hard to find a dog of proper temperment that is still liveable. I would strongly suggest spending time with some and maybe even fostering one for rescue. Good luck in whatever you choose.

The ones I have taken care of have gone either way.... either confident or on the nervous side, which could very well be upbringing as well as genetics. I get "fairly" calm ones with a great dispostion and others I can handle, but don't trust. They are all pretty clingy, but not near as neurotic as a Weim.
I used to have a Rottie from Kimbertal I got in the early 80s. He was a great dog. I currently board a Kimbertal Dobe who is great as well, but WAY oversized for the breed. I'm not sure what kind of operation they run there now, they have a lot of dogs and used to show (which was at least something).

I like Dobes (used to have two), but would not get one again. Even though I am still searching for a replacement for my RR. They did cross my mind briefly though. Very briefly :)

Gen, I had a Dobie ( Erins Greta of Windsong) when I was about your age. She was a royal pain in the ass. I was young and admittedly dumb when it came to understanding dogs and their behavior . Greta had a very high activity need, was stubborn, and hyper .I am not making my recommendation based on the ownership of one dog 30 years ago. I am saying this based on the Dobies that I have encountered since then. It seems the show ring took its toll here too and this led to high numbers of skittish , weak nerved dogs. I believe there are still good Dobies to be found but the good ones demand alot of time , attention and excercise.
Just like any breed, the key is a good breeder who knows what they are breeding and your need ( want)

Nope I'm not talking about that, this woman was trying to breed a Dobe that was free from all the typical health and temperment problems through hybrid vigor, it was really neat, I saw pics on Bandog of one of these puppies being trained and it looked just like a Dobe. Pretty neat project. I believe it was a woman in the UK...

I was perusing the archives and stumbled across this. I believe you are talking about Julie Alexander. Her kennel was Talisman Kennel. She is back in Washington state, although she apprenticed at Falawoods in Illinois after her husband unexpectedly passed away. Anyway I believe she still occasionally breeds, although I believe she has downsized a bit since her husband passed away. They are supposed to be pretty good, and some of them turned out like golden-colored Dobes, some looked just like normal Dobes (which makes sense since they were, I believe, crossbreds linebred back into pure Dobes).

More are available at the Falawoods website.

dobermans are excellent dogs they are very intellident and easy to train at a young age. dobermans dont mature as quik as presas but when they do mature they make awesome guards. if you want a dobie ou have to look for a good one
