Ok, so everyone who's ever followed their dogs, or their children around with a camera knows the bitter truth, which is that all the best photos are the ones you never take. You spend all your time chasing after those fleeting perfect moments, and you never capture them. Maybe you will once in your life, but the best pictures are the ones you never take. Each one has a story.

Picture this: I'm trying to give the pups early stimulation, giving them some kind of new experience every day, not too harsh but enough to stimulate them. Yesterday the weather was gorgeous so I decided to take them outside for a little while. It's a good chance to let Mr. Brick see them too, he's enamored with them and I'm starting to let him see them for really brief periods, if he stays very still and I'm right there.

I loaded the pups all into in crates and got a blanket and spread it out under a tree, with dappled sunshine flickering on the grass beneath, and took the puppies out three and four at a time. Bess lay down on the edge of the blanket and Brick lay beside her, his back resting on hers. The puppies explored tentatively at first, but more vigorously when they found their parents. Some tried to crawl under Brick, who'd keep scootching backwards to keep from touching them. When they moved away he'd sniff them, tail thumping on the grass.

The pups found their way to mamma and began to nurse, tails buzzing, grunting the way they do when the milk flows, "Ummm, ummm, umm .."

Brick set his paw on Bessie's and they both looked up at me and there it was. Blanket, green grass, shadows and sunbeams dancing around us, blue sky, pups nursing, mom and dad holding hands, and looking into my eyes.

Wow. And I left my stupid camera in the house.
