There is a major issue and problem within this breed that is bigger than any pedigree, health, temperment, or type issue.
It is simply that every individual involved in this breed has a different impression , interpretation of what the presa canario should be like. Not a simple split between the "dogo board" and the "el Presa board", but between members within the same club. And not little differences ,but major difference on temperment , structural type , and just about everything else.
There is unbelievable amounts of wasted energy spent arguing and debating things that will never be agreed on(which I am also guilty of), and never really any conclussion.
I understand why people that have been involved in the breed much longer than most of us( with obvious exceptions of course) that post these days , just stop posting or never started in the first place. How often have we seen or heard from any of the breeders right from the Canary Islands concerning themselves with what we have to say about their breed of dog. And simply thinking it is because they dont read english is ridiculas, because if it was important it is very easy to have translated, just as we translate spanish text on the breed. They dont give a $h!t what we think or do. They will continue to breed their dogs, export them , work them , show them or what every they choose to do with them.
To think we once had the privlage to have Mr. Curto post occationally, but some American turkey's actually thought they new more regarding the Perro de Presa Canario.
Every single kennel has dogs of widely varying type. Even within the same kennel.
The only solution is research and choose what you like.
I wonder if this lack of concensus is a reflection of our time. I said before, and I think is true , 90% of the people that own or research or breed presa canario discovered it because of the internet. Which allows the most diverse and verying population to express their opinion. This also side effects such as being able to hide identity.there is noway knowing if someone is just a joker or truely experienced. I write the breeder of my dog with many , many questions and always get a patient, intellegent , sincery answer , but one email contained the best advice regarding all of the conflicts and opossitions in the breed:
"Stop worrying, enjoy your dogs!"
