We have all heard of Wives Tails when it comes to dogs. When I had my Doberman I was told over and over that she would "turn on me", we have all heard about the locking jaws on the PitBull. What are some other Wives Tales and Myths about dogs ?

One myth I have heard over and over is:

You can let a dog lick your wounds because its saliva is like an antiseptic.

How about a female dog should always have one litter because she will be more calm in the future because she has got to use some of her mothering instincts ? This is a myth, Mothering instincts are temporary, the fact is environment and genetics are what will shape a dogs personality.

Everybody in the family has to eat something, even just a cracker, before the dog eats, or it will become "alpha".

In a single litter of puppies each puppy can have a different father.

A litter of pups can have more than one father. That is fact not myth. Joe, I do not believe that "everyone has to eat before the dog, even if it is a cracker or the dog will become an Alpha ", however, putting your dog in a sit, keeping them out of the kitchen while you eat and making them wait is a good way to reenforcing , you and your families position, relative to the dog.

yea, I don't let my dog lean over the dinner table and sample my sirlion. there was some book out that espoused "gesture eating" where all the family, mom, dad, and kids, all gathered around and ate a cracker so you could feed the dog. horsefeathers. Idiatrod mushers all know, the dogs comes first. you feed and bed the dogs and then you worry about yourself. I dont see any mushers with alpha problems....

I had a gal ask me the other day that if her Presa was bred with a mutt one heat and had mutt puppies the next litter would also produce mutts even if she was bred to a purebred. I can' believe that myth is going around! Sometime's people need to slow down and thinks a little bit!

I dont have any dog ones but I did hear one about a cat. It said dont leave a cat alone with a baby because the cat will smell the milk on the baby's breathe and suffocate the baby trying to get the milk.

What about; Give the dog the first stool of your newborn baby. it will only accept the baby when he eats it........Yech!

I never heard that one about the baby crap, ewwwww, maybe it never made it across the pond. I did hear the one about the cat, and another variant, a cat will "suck the breath out of your baby". My Grandma told me that one, and she believed it. Here's another old wives' tale, among my favorites:

the Presa Canario evolved as a protection dog

HA!

A guy in Louisiana told me to pick the pups with big heads and big A$$Ho(e$, they make the best dogs. I don't know how scientific this advise is, LOL.

My family believes the black inside of the mouth "wive's tale". We have never known a dog with a red mouth to be worth a crap.
