Interesting article about the International Federation of Sleddog Sports Dryland Championship, featuring Scooter Classes, held Dec. 13, 2003, in Aranda de Duero, Spain. A good quote from Ididarod racer Joe Runyan:
In conclusion, perhaps the big story to come out of this race is opined by
Race Marshal Joe Runyan, who sees dryland racers breeding for a different type
of dog than is used for snow events. Probably bigger, it will have the
endurance for the shorter distances in dryland but the extra strength
required. These dogs will be specialized for 3-5 km, which is not conducive to
the longer snow trails. Runyan also postulates that dryland is the event to
prove success for the future of the mushing sport and anticipates its rapid
growth in Europe and North America as well as many other places where
appropriate snow conditions are a gamble at best.

Ps. Mitch Seavey won the Iditarod on Tuesday, with a time of 9 days, 12 hours, 22 minutes and 22 seconds.
