Hi, I have a beautiful black/brindle Presa named Capone. He is a 3 year old male and I absolutely love him. I have one problem we can't seem to correct and I was wondering if anyone else out there has ever encountered a similar problem. Capone's ears get moist inside and I'm having a hard time controlling it. It really bothers him at times and my vet isn't sure if it's a canal issue. Anyone with any knowledge of this please respond. Thanks, Bruce.

It is normal for a dogs ears to be moist inside. Is he scratching or shaking his head ? Does his ears stink when you smell them ? Mites and infection are quite common. Did your vet do a swab ? I think it would be best to consult a vet for a diagnosis. Most ear problems can be treated with a topical solution, more persistent ones may require surgery. Get multiple opinions.

Thanks for the response. I have been trying to control the problem with Otomax, which my vet gave me. It seems to help control, but is not the solution. He has mentioned the possibility of surgery. I was hoping we could avoid that, but if that's the only real solution then I will.

I read an article someplace when I was researching my dogs ear infection. It comes and goes, sometimes it causes her to swell up a little.
We have used a topical solution and for the most part it keeps it under control. I have to get another opinion. This article suggested a solution of
well... I cannot remember but I will find it, it told of a chronic 6 year ear problem that disappeared after a certain solution was introduced , I will see if I can find it and post it. I may try it myself.

Gentian Violet 1% solution is an anti fungal and should be available at your local pharmacy. It does not require prescription.

Well, here we go...I have only introduced the concoction into Capone's ears for 1 week and there is already a remarkable change. I thank you all from the bottom of my heart for this remedy. Capone doesn't shake his head hardly at all anymore and the odor has been reduced significantly. This seems to be a Godsend after everything I've tried for the past few months. Once again...Thank you one and all for your input. This is an absolutely wonderful site. Thanks Paolo for all of your interest and insight into our breed.

Playa has a reoccuring ear infection , I think it started from all of the moisture and water that she used to get in her uncropped ears. I have had very kliitle luck keeping it away for good, it always seems to come back. Iam going to try this remedy, I am hoping that it is as succesful with Playa as it was with Capone.

I'm bringing this back up to the top for "Presamom." She posted a question about ear infections...
Best of luck,

Thank you, Jennifer. We too have spent a lot of money on Katie [the Greyhound]'s ears. As I said in the posting you mentioned we are taking her up to Tucson to a specialist Tuesday. I am afraid at this point we may be dealing with a ruptured eardrum as well as yucky infection. I'll see what the vet says. But, I guarantee tomorrow I'll be at the pharmacy to pick up the ingredients. So we can start the treatment ASAP.
Right now we can't put anything liquid in the ear. But, as soon as that's done we are good to go.
Gentian Violet is an old friend to horse people. Why not dogs?
Thanks to everybody. Cara

Often the cause of ear infections is yeast. I have attached a good article regarding this:

My two (almost 4 year old) females have uncroped ears and we have never had an ear infection.....

We took Ranger's companion Katie up to Tucson today and they said they would have to do ear surgery. She has had this problem for years and it was never addressed correctly. She has a high hearing loss in the ear already, but will be completely deaf in the right after the surgery. At least she will be out of pain. Her left ear is fine.
When we got home Ranger knew something wasn't right. He is very protective of her and kept sniffing and rubbing her.
Keep us all in your prayers she goes for surgery next Tuesday.
