PERRO DE PRESA CANARIO

FIGHTING DOG OF THE CANARY ISLANDS

Alphie

Perro de Presa Canario, translated to English would be Canary Gripping Dog. Although you may have never heard of him, the Presa Canario is so common in his home country that the islands were named after him.

The speed, agility, and power possessed by this Mastiff-sized breed is so overwhelming that his popularity has done nothing but skyrocket since his introduction into the United States in the late '80s.

As with many other fighting breeds, he also serves as a great hunting, guard, and companion dog. Hunting It has been his popularity outside of the Canary Islands, however, where breeders are more interested in the color of the dog's coat and his performance in the show ring than his functionality and genetic predisposition for health, that has already begun to detiororate this dog's amazing qualities, bringing him closer and closer to the more lethargic Mastiff breeds.

This has created a strong division between the new breeders who produce dogs for show and the thousands of dollars in the exports market and those who continue to breed along the old standards producing dogs with an obvious "rusticity" and deep gameness.

On the following pages I hope you will get to learn a little more about the Presa Canario.
