Rosettes to Ruin - by Patrick Burns
Originally
pusblished in the Newspaper "Canarias 7", August the 15th, 1993
When the dog, the best
friend of the man, becomes passion, study and improvement of canine
breeds, character and functionality, then it is not anymore only pure
liking, is authentic cynophilia. And that passion for the dog
is the one that has Manuel Moreno Miranda, pioneer in Gran Canaria of
the canine exhibitions, and the recovery of the breed Presa Canario.
Passion the he has since he was a child, as his most loved Christmas
present was a dog.
The authentic Presa
Canario.
Since he was 7 years
old he already had Presa dogs, whose names are kept in his memory,
repeating them with some melancholy: the Negrito, the
Capulino or Domingo (presa dog that appears in the above picture and
that was taken as reference because of his characteristics in the
recovery of the breed). In the Seventies in the north of the
Island a group of dog enthusiasts, began to question themselves about
the future of the Presa Canario, as they realized that without taking
any action the breed could disappear. Because of this situation, they
organized the first exhibition of the Presa Canario in the north (of
the island), more precisely in San Isidro, and that was a full success,
and was the first decisive step in Gran Canario for the recovery of the
breed, that will lead to a great "boom" of the breed in the Eigthies,
and that is still going on.

The image on the left represent a reality in front of which it is impossible to be indifferent, it is the change in the shape of the Bull Terrier head caused by fifty years of breeding selection mastered by show exhibitions. It is a simple yet effective proof of the serious and deep consequences caused by the show ring and of his negative impact on the functional characteristics of working breeds -- and the Presa Canario was originally intended as a functional dog before any other thing, this is history and nobody will be ever able to change it.I chose to present here an interesting article with the title "Rosettes to ruin", written by an enthusiast of Terrier breeds, family in which many races has been deeply changed by the world of the show exhibitions (or better said "show competitions") in their original physical and character traits. The proof of that is that the number of the breeds that can still do the work for which they were originally bred is persistently decreasing; this is the point that looked interesting to me and that I hope that may let think about it not only the Terrie enthusiast but also, and especially, the Presa Canario enthusiast. |

Interview with Mr. Asensio of Atlas Asio Kennels
Here is presented an interview to Mr. Juan Carlos Asensio, owner of the
Presa Canario kennel "Atlas Asio", from Madrid (Spain), that was realized in the 1998. The interview
was originally published in the former spanish magazine "Molosos,
terriers y perros de presa". I think it can be an element of interest
for all the fanciers of the Presa Canario, because, apart from who is
interviewed, a clear concept is being communicated, wich I completely
share: a Presa Canario cannot be judged in a show ring, as it is just
too far from the world in wich the breed was originally intended, and
because it should be judged mainly upon his functional skills; it must
not become a "money business" for scrupeless breeders dedicated to
commercialization, but it must be safeguarded in its original and
authentics characteristics. The natural conclusion of all this can be
summed up in a single phrase: the beauty of the Presa Canario resides
essentially in its functionality.

When you browse our forums, especially the Spanish forum, it is
possible to read several interesting articles dedicated to the history
of the Presa Canario, these are a great help to those who wish to know
about the evolution of our breed.
In this case I've chosen to translate a quite an old article, from
1988, written by Clemente Reyes Santana, a true expert of the breed and
often judge of various exhibitions dedicated to the breed. The article,
in its integral version, is titled "The Perro de Presa Canario" and was
published in the magazine "Aguayro" (the magazine of the bank Caja de
Canarias) in September-October 1988. In the the article there
are many references to the gladiator past of the Presa Canario. We take
distance from the cruel and illegal present day dog fighting (much
different in form and substance from the "pechadas" of the
past decades), but at the same time I think it is not right to hide
this historic aspect as it pertains to the past of the breed.
The author provides much interesting information about the origins and
the characteristics of the breed, shedding light on the
situation of the breed in the Canaries during the second half of the
Eighties (a very complicated period, a period that witnessed scarce
diffusion of the breed and the many crossings).

Before I got a Presa, I knew I wanted to compete in weight pull.
I first heard about the sport
several years earlier, in books and articles about the American Pit
Bull Terrier and the American Bulldog. I learned that since the 1980's,
the sport of weight pull has been used by sporting enthusiasts who
raise these dogs. Since fighting is no longer considered ethical or
legal, breeders and owners needed another sport in which their dogs
could excel. Weight
pull proved to be that sport, and quickly the bull breeds became the
dogs to beat, from the 30 lb. class to 125 lb. and beyond. The natural
strength and enormous heart of these breeds made them perfect
competitors. Weight pulling became a passion for breeders and owners,
and proved to be an exciting venue where the dogs could be matched,
best against the best. |

I was so entertained reading the "Origin of the pure arabian blood, legend and truths", of the book, the Pure Arabian Blood, of Kristian
Fenaux, when rang the phone. Hello, yes, I am Manuel Curtó. Who called
me was a young Gallego (from Galicia), fan of the Perro de Presa
Canario, to say me that in the magazine Aviòn Revue, Num. 218, August
2000, appears a Perro the Presa Canario of year 1927. It is worth that
you obtains the magazine, insisted. |

It took place on Saturday June 18th, 2005, in the town of Firgas, Gran
Canaria, a get-together of Presa Canario “aficionados”. The event was
not meant to choose a winner, but to let it possible for these people
to meet. Also Clemente Reyes Santana, that does not need any
introduction for those inside the Presa Canario world, was present at
the show. The photos were made by Antonio Griñan Santana, form Las
Palmas of Gran Canaria, and that was kind enough to answer some
questions for us. |
