Here is presented an interview to Mr. Juan Carlos Asensio, owner of the Presa Canario kennel "Atlas Asio", from Madrid (Spain), that was realized in the 1998. The interview was originally published in the former spanish magazine "Molosos, terriers y perros de presa". I think it can be an element of interest for all the fanciers of the Presa Canario, because, apart from who is interviewed, a clear concept is being communicated, wich I completely share: a Presa Canario cannot be judged in a show ring, as it is just too far from the world in wich the breed was originally intended, and because it should be judged mainly upon his functional skills; it must not become a "money business" for scrupeless breeders dedicated to commercialization, but it must be safeguarded in its original and authentics characteristics. The natural conclusion of all this can be summed up in a single phrase: the beauty of the Presa Canario resides essentially in its functionality. Mr. J.C. Asensio and Luis Lozano during the interview | Several subjects are then handled through the interesting interview: the first steps of the breeder inside the Presa Canario world, his first breeding experiences, the future of the breed, the breeding and selections criteria, and a glance is finally casted at the actual situation of other breeds as the Majorero and the American Pit Bull Terrier. I wish to thanks Mr. Gabi of the kennel "Iron Bull" for sharing the document and, for the english translations, the collaborators David Espinoza (U.S.A.) and Omar Sobarzo Medina (Chile). Now there is nothing left but to read the interview.
